Arkansas Needs a New State Water Plan

Arkansas is facing several water crises that will hurt families, limit our economic potential and threaten our wildlife.  Arkansas’ water plan is over 20 years old.  The plan needs to be updated to address current concerns and recommend policies that will support safe drinking water, agricultural needs, wildlife needs, and provide adequate pollution monitoring.

We applaud the Arkansas Natural Resources Commission for starting on a new water plan.

An Arkansas Water Plan should:

  • Be based on strong science with an emphasis on healthy rivers, lakes and aquifers using sustainable in-stream flows .
  • Have collaboration, shared responsibility and funding between the Arkansas Natural Resources Commission, Department of Environmental Quality, Game and Fish Commission, and the Heath Department.
  • Have a process that is clearly defined, transparent and accountable.
  • Include the public and all stakeholder groups.

An Arkansas state Water Plan should address our biggest challenges

  • Water quality
  • Water quantity
  • Development pressure and growth
  • Shale development issues
  • Aquifers
  • Dilapidated infrastructure of drinking and sewage systems
