CFC continues to work for positive change at the Capitol!

Dear Friend,

Join us Wednesday for an Energy and Water Day at the Capitol! We will host a breakfast from at 7:30 - 9:00 at the Capitol Hill Building, across 4th Street from the Capitol. We expect the legislature to be in session despite the predicted snowy weather, so come meet your legislators over a meal and let them know why Arkansas needs better energy and water policy.

After breakfast we will have a photo with Governor Beebe and see legislative committees in action. Get an update on water and energy issues in Arkansas over lunch, and watch the House and Senate in session in the afternoon. The photo with the Governor will be at 9:45 in the Governor's Conference Room, and Lunch will be 11:30-1:00 at the Arkansas Education Association building (next door to the Capitol Hill Building).

CFC Priorities at the the Capitol:

After testifying against HB1008, the "anti-DREAM Act," and seeing it tabled by the House Education Committee, we are now guarding against a broader anti-immigrant bill.  Immigration reform must be done at the Federal level - state level immigration legislation is discriminatory, ineffective and expensive.

We oppose HB1292, which would prohibit "illegal aliens" - as it is worded in the bill - from receiving ANY state benefit, including: in-state tuition, financial assistance, welfare, social security disability, grants of assistance, prescription drug programs, and more.  The bill makes an exception for emergencies. The bill has been referred to the House State Agencies and Governmental Affairs Committee.

We support HB1056 by Rep. Uvalde Lindsey, to provide income tax relief to single parents with two or more kids. This would fix a gap in the 2007 law that was intended to exempt all low-income families from state income taxes. This will likely come before the House Revenue and Tax Committee this week.

We support SB65 by Sen. Jimmy Jeffress, which will remove red tape in the ARKids First health insurance program and allow over 20,000 children currently qualified for the program to enroll and receive coverage. This will be considered by the Senate Insurance and Commerce Committee.
